"Nothing happens unless first a dream." Carl Sandburg

Remember when you believed that you could change the world?  Where are those dreams and aspirations of youth?  You may feel you, or your business or, business unit are now ready for a life makeover but are not sure what the changes should be.

But you know you want more than what is.

In "Vision: Your Pathway to Victory" author Gordon D'Angelo defines "vision" as the process that brings imagination to creation.  Every function, everything that is, was created from something that wasn't there.  The founder is a visionary.  You possess this power, and can use it as you wish.

A Vision or Mission Statement allows us the right and freedom to form the end-results that we choose to bring into existence.  People who accomplish great things have a combined passion for a single mission with an unswerving dedication to achieve that mission, whatever the obstacles and however long it might take.

Vision is a destination that identifies exactly where you want to go, what results you want, and when.  You need to be specific.  Whether you are perceived as a huge success or content to be a successful person by your own standards, you still need to have a vision that clearly illustrates the destination.  Clarity is a substantial part of a Vision or Mission Statement.

Your vision or mission can become an attraction for others.  Writing a vision/mission and sharing it with others creates a following.  People will remember, respect, and elevate you because of your vision/mission.

For Peter Drucker, leadership is about communicating with people, uniting them behind a shared mission and values, and mobilising energies toward accomplishing the mission or purpose of an organisation.

An effective leader leads followers with dignity, and inspires them toward achievement.  That means that leadership is a means to an end - the mission it serves is the end.

Goals convert vision/mission into energy.  When you lay out exactly what you want to do in detail, you immediately start feeling the room move and the earth shake.

Knowing who we are and what we are meant to do allows us to focus our energy and achieve sustained high performance.  This is true for a person, a business, or for an organisation and for each of the people who work there.

To get started, begin to write out your identity elements as a work-in-process toward clarifying who you really are for yourself and those around you.  Because what you become aware of is identity-driven, knowing who you are will help you understand why you do what you do.
