As a leader, a good way to build teams is through self-assessments, for example DISC Personal profiles or Team Management profiles, and exercises that provide deep self-reflection and relationship evaluation.
Although, the above tools are very useful and helpful for self-analysis, actually, team building is not just about the team; it's about looking inside ourselves to understand our default behaviour, when dealing with individual or, group dynamics or, when operating under pressure. As people become more self-aware, they are usually amazed at the abilities of the conscious mind to choose, handle situations with deliberation, and behave appropriately for different occasions.
On the flip side, the unconscious mind is a powerful force driving our behaviour.
Within our unconscious lie veiled assumptions and beliefs that formulate what is called default behaviour. The dictionary defines default as the "failure to perform a task or fulfil an obligation," which means that default behaviours are reactive responses that occur when we fail to consider the appropriate response. For example, shouting at a team member or ignoring their input when looking at a problem, particularly when feeling under stress or pressure.Becoming aware of our personal reactive tendencies is crucial if we want to make sense of our toxic behaviours, understand why we have permitted these gremlins to continue, and develop a plan for taming them.
Working closely with and opening up with a coach is an efficient and productive way of developing ourselves for the many challenges we face as a proactive team member or leader.
Our attitudes are choices, some of the most important choices we will ever make.
